Ƶwelcomes passage of FY 2024 federal budget, braces for FY 2025

Ƶ

The FY 2024 federal budget signed into law by President Biden on Saturday, March 23, contained level funding for the two dedicated federal funding programs for America’s libraries, LSTA and IAL. Other library programs remain aligned with FY 2023 levels, with the exception of the Library of Congress and National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, which received modest increases.

Submissions Now Open for the 2024 John Cotton Dana Awards

Up to eight $10,000 awards will be provided by the H.W. Wilson Foundation in 2024. Libraries of all types and sizes are encouraged to submit entries for a 2024 John Cotton Dana Award. Entries should highlight a strategic communications campaign from the past year. Examples of past campaigns have included rebranding efforts, promotion of archives and special collections, awareness campaigns, community partnerships and special events. Entries may be submitted by any library, Friends group, consulting agency or service provider, unless they are represented on the JCD committee.

As policymakers turn their eyes toward new ways to provide high-speed internet connectivity across the nation, the Ƶ (ALA) is at the forefront of advocacy to ensure public libraries and their communities benefit from new funding opportunities. Since mid-January 2024, Ƶhas filed formal comments calling for improvements to the federal E-rate program through the Learn Without Limits initiative, unveiled at 2023 Annual Conference by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. The proposal calls for use of E-rate funding for off-premises internet access and a cybersecurity pilot program

Today, the Ƶ (ALA) is pleased to announce the addition of five new members to the Policy Corps’ Unite Against Book Bans cadre: Kate Alderete, Carolyn Foote, Jamie M.
