Cultivating kindness and wellbeing in libraries

Core extends free webinar registration for LIS students and faculty

CHICAGO - Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures (Core) is pleased to announce that LIS students who are student members of the ��Ƶ may again this year register for any Core webinar free of charge.

Students who wish to take advantage of this offer need to be current student members of ��Ƶand register in advance for the webinar(s) in which they are interested. Students need not be Core members.

In addition, Core is extending its free registration initiative this year to any LIS faculty member who wishes to use any of the Core webinars in their courses. This offer extends to both live and recorded webinars.

Students need only to fill out the registration form for the webinar of their choice located on the Core website.

948,000 and Counting: Free Webinar on Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Qualifying employees can receive federal student debt relief. Over 948,000 public servants have benefitted so far.

WASHINGTON — The ��Ƶ (ALA) will present a free webinar for library workers about Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) on Oct. 2, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

The webinar will explain how to obtain student loan relief from the PSLF program, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Education. PSLF will forgive the federal student loan balances with qualifying employment history at a government or non-profit organization, such as many school, academic, public, and special libraries.

To date, nearly 1 million public servants — including qualifying library workers – have received more than $69 billion in loan forgiveness under PSLF.

“For years, ��Ƶhas advocated for library workers’ access to Public Service Loan Forgiveness,” said ��ƵPresident Cindy Hohl. “We’re proud to host this webinar so more library workers can learn about this important opportunity for student debt relief.”

The webinar is presented by Public Service Promise, a new non-profit that works to educate public servants about the process for obtaining student loan forgiveness through PSLF. Betsy Mayotte, an expert on student loans and President of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors, will walk through the requirements of qualifying for the program and will answer general questions about how to navigate the application process.

CHICAGO—Core/Buildings & Operations: Buildings for College and University Libraries and Planning & Design Committees are pleased to present the four-part webinar series “Library Facility Master Planning." Library leaders with responsibility for one or more buildings continually grapple with aging systems and facilities, while also keeping physical spaces fresh and responsive to evolving service and programming needs. Without a comprehensive plan, a series of small improvements in individual rooms or partial floors can lead to an inconsistent patron and staff experience and inefficient resource use. Additionally, without a master plan, collection management policies intended to free up library space, can make library real estate targets for both desirable and less desirable non-library uses. Administrative support and campus funding requests are better received when presented within the context of a master plan that aligns with campus-wide strategic goals. This series explores the key aspects of a Library Facility Master Plan, from understanding its necessity and initiation to practical insights about conducting a master planning process, along with lessons learned. In this webinar, participants will learn about a collaborative partnership between an academic library and offices within Student Affairs and campus IT to identify and fund long-term (full academic year) laptops to students most in need of this critical technology. The presenter will provide a case study of how a small pilot program quickly gained popularity and became a paramount service in meeting the needs of at-risk students while building meaningful cross-institutional relationships. The presenter will demonstrate how to develop campus partnerships to implement long-term technology lending programs and meet the technology needs of at-risk students to promote their overall success in an equitable and scalable manner. Attendees will gain insight (including powerful impact data) on how to make the case for similar programs at their higher education institutions, and they will take away an understanding of how to operationalize such a service, leveraging lessons learned from pitfalls experienced in the pilot program.

CHICAGO – The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the publication of “Information Literacy and Social Media: Empowered Student Engagement with the ACRL Framework” by Michele Santamaría and Nicole Pfannenstiel, demonstrating how to engage students with and through social media platforms and teach them to embrace their role as information creators through engagement with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

Teaching our students how to become flexible and accurate evaluators of information requires teaching them adaptable processes and not static heuristics. Our conventional information literacy teaching and learning tools are simply not up to tackling the life-long, real-world challenges and transferable applications required by today’s evolving information landscape.

"Information Literacy and Social Media" provides librarians and non-librarian practitioners with ways to teach and learn with social media. It addresses how to broadly conceptualize information literacy teaching with social media and allay any student reluctance to using social media for academic purposes. It proposes how to map some of the ACRL threshold concepts onto specific social media platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok, while providing general guidance for if and when those platforms change.

There are eight concrete, cross-disciplinary lesson plans that factor in design, assessment, and student engagement. These lesson plans offer multiple platform ideas so readers can remix the approach to suit their learning contexts. Finally, applying information literacy dispositions, the book considers how up-and-coming platforms might empower students to be critical content creators and encourage librarians and faculty to support and create new information literacy initiatives on their campuses. "Information Literacy and Social Media" can help you teach your students to be truly metaliterate in the creative and ethical ways that make information literacy an essential college competency.
