The EMIERT Distinguished Librarian Award recognizes significant accomplishments in library services that are national or international in scope and that include improving, spreading, and promoting multicultural services in libraries. Nominees must have a Master's of Library Science degree from an ��Ƶaccredited institution.

Persons in the library world are eligible to be considered for the award based on outstanding achievement and leadership in serving the community by significant collection building and outreach services, and/or developing creative multicultural materials and programs. Emphasis here is multicultural/multiethnic as distinguished from multilingual.

It is of the opinion of Lemony Snicket, author, reader, and alleged malcontent, that librarians have suffered enough. Therefore he is establishing an annual prize honoring a librarian who has faced adversity with integrity and dignity intact. The prize will be a generous amount of cash from Mr. Snicket's disreputable gains, along with an odd, symbolic object from his private stash, and a certificate, which may or may not be suitable for framing. It is Mr. Snicket's hope, and the ALA's, that the Snicket Prize will remind readers everywhere of the joyous importance of librarians and the trouble that is all too frequently unleashed upon them.

About

From 1984-2009, the State and Regional Intellectual Freedom Achievement Award was given to the most innovative and effective intellectual freedom project covering a state or region. Projects could be one-time, one-year or ongoing/multi-year efforts. The award consisted of a citation and $1,000. The award was underwritten first by SIRS, then by ProQuest/SIRS.

Gerald Hodges joined the ��Ƶstaff in 1989 as Director of Membership Services and the Chapter Relations Office. At his death in 2006, he was the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing, but his passion was still Intellectual Freedom and Chapter Relations. Hodges willed a portion of his estate to establish the Gerald Hodges Fund in support of intellectual freedom. Memorial contributions to that fund also came from many friends and colleagues. In 2013, it was decided that the most appropriate use of that fund would be to re-institute the former "State and Regional Intellectual Freedom Achievement Award" as the "Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award."

Criteria

An ��Ƶchapter or other qualified organization has been unusually successful in coalition-building so that allied groups are marshaled effectively to support intellectual freedom at the national, state or regional level.
An ��Ƶchapter or other qualified organization has done an exemplary PR task in promoting awareness of intellectual freedom issues at the national, state or region level.
A project has been effective in recruiting activists within and outside of librarianship to work on intellectual freedom projects.
A structure has been conceived that markedly enhances the continuity and effectiveness of the organization's efforts in intellectual freedom.
A chapter, etc. has succeeded in galvanizing to an unusual extent support for intellectual freedom within a state chapter.
An chapter, etc. has intervened with special effectiveness in an intellectual freedom crisis at the national, state or regional level. Such intervention should, preferably, have resulted in a clear victory over the forces of censorship.
Projects that can be generalized to other chapters, etc. will merit special attention of the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award.

The winner does not need to be a member of ALA, RUSA, or BRASS but preference will be given to those that are, indeed members. Applicants should be an academic librarian with five or fewer years of experience in business librarianship or be a new (less than five years) member to BRASS.

About the Honorary Membership

Honorary membership may be conferred on a living person whose contribution to libraries and/or librarianship, or a closely related field, is so outstanding that it is of lasting importance to the advancement of the whole field of library service. The awarding of honorary membership is intended to reflect honor upon the ��Ƶ as well as upon the individual.

Criteria

A person’s contributions to libraries and/or librarianship must be so outstanding that there can be no question about their eligibility

The designation recognizes the contribution of an individual, rather than that of an individual representing the accomplishments of many.
Honorary membership is conferred because of a contribution of more than passing interest and of more than local or regional achievement.
The nominee’s actions or contribution to libraries and/or librarianship should be in clear alignment with or support of one or more of ALA’s Core Values of Librarianship.
The recipient may be a library worker or a person in a related field.

Nomination Instructions

To nominate an individual to Honorary Membership, complete the online ��ƵHonorary Member Nomination Form. The form and all attachments must be received by September 1, 2024. Late nominations will not be considered.

The ��ƵHonorary Member Nomination Form includes the following submission materials:

Attachments
- Copy of curriculum vitae, which includes biography, career, honors, memberships, leadership positions, and/or publications
- Letters of Recommendations (min. 3, max. 5)
Questions
- Tell us about the outstanding contributions this individual has made to libraries and librarianship.
- If the nominee does not work in the library field, how has their work and contributions had an impact on libraries and librarianship?
- With which ��ƵCore Value(s) do the nominee's actions or contributions directly align? Please provide examples of how their work and contributions align with each value you have identified.
- Is there anything else regarding this nomination that the Executive Board should know?

Criteria were developed by the ��ƵExecutive Board Committee on Honorary Members, Special Nominations and Assignments (Kathleen Molz, Norman Horrocks, and Eric Moon, Chair) and first approved by the ��ƵExecutive Board, June 1979. Revised by ��ƵExecutive Board members (Stephanie Chase, Ana Elisa de Campos Salles, Amy Lappin and Christina Rodriques) February 2024.

National Friends of Libraries Week Award applicants must provide a one- to two-page summary of all activities and efforts in conjunction with the celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week. Applications for the 2012 awards will be available in October 2012.
